Vitamin B3
What is Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Vitamin B3, also known as niacin or nicotinic acid, is one of the eight essential B vitamins. It plays a critical role in maintaining overall health and supporting several physiological functions.
Key Functions of Vitamin B3
Energy Metabolism: Supports the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to generate energy.
DNA Repair: Assists in repairing damaged DNA and preserving genetic stability.
Skin Health: Promotes cell growth and helps in the repair of damaged skin.
Cholesterol Regulation: Helps reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
Brain Function: Involved in the production of neurotransmitters necessary for proper brain activity.
Sources of Vitamin B3
Dietary sources include meat, fish, poultry, peanuts, mushrooms, and whole grains. Niacin can also be synthesized in the body from tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods such as turkey, chicken, and soybeans.
Pre-Test Instructions
Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours before a Vitamin B3 test, as it can interfere with the absorption and metabolism of niacin.
