Bilirubin Indirect

The Bilirubin Indirect blood test is a medical test that measures the level of indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish substance that is produced when red blood cells break down. It is typically processed by the liver and excreted in the bile, which is then eliminated from the body through the feces. Indirect bilirubin is not water-soluble and must be processed by the liver before it can be eliminated from the body. A high level of indirect bilirubin in the blood may indicate a problem with the liver or an excessive breakdown of red blood cells. The Bilirubin Indirect blood test is typically ordered as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel or liver function test.
