Bilirubin Total
The Bilirubin Total blood test is a medical test that measures the total level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish substance that is produced when red blood cells break down. It is typically processed by the liver and excreted in the bile, which is then eliminated from the body through the feces. There are two forms of bilirubin: indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin and direct (conjugated) bilirubin. Indirect bilirubin is not water-soluble and must be processed by the liver before it can be eliminated from the body. Direct bilirubin, on the other hand, is water-soluble and can be eliminated directly in the bile. The Bilirubin Total blood test measures both the direct and indirect forms of bilirubin in the blood. A high level of total bilirubin in the blood may indicate a problem with the liver or an excessive breakdown of red blood cells. It can also be an indicator of certain medical conditions, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or gallstones. The Bilirubin Total blood test is typically ordered as part of a liver function test or a comprehensive metabolic panel.
