Calcium Ionised (Ca++)

Ionized calcium is the portion of total calcium in the blood that is not bound to proteins, and is available to perform its physiological functions in the body. The ionized calcium blood test measures the amount of calcium that is freely available in the blood. This test is important in monitoring calcium levels in patients with certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, parathyroid disorders, and some types of cancer. Low levels of ionized calcium in the blood can lead to muscle spasms, cramps, and twitching, as well as numbness and tingling in the extremities. High levels of ionized calcium in the blood can lead to confusion, lethargy, and even coma, in severe cases. Treatment for abnormal ionized calcium levels will depend on the underlying cause, and may include medication, dietary changes, and/or lifestyle modifications.
