About this test

What is CA 19-9?

CA 19-9, also known as carbohydrate antigen 19-9, is a protein that can be released into the bloodstream by certain cancer cells. It is most commonly associated with pancreatic cancer, but may also be elevated in other gastrointestinal cancers and some non-cancerous conditions.

Purpose of the CA 19-9 Blood Test

The CA 19-9 blood test measures the level of this tumour marker in the bloodstream. It is not used as a general cancer screening tool but serves an important role in:

Monitoring the progress of cancer treatment

Detecting recurrence of pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers

Assisting in the diagnostic process when used alongside imaging and clinical evaluations

CA 19-9 and Pancreatic Cancer

CA 19-9 is particularly useful in patients with pancreatic cancer. It helps assess the tumour’s response to treatment and can indicate whether the cancer has returned. It may also be used to evaluate the extent and spread of the disease when first diagnosed.

Limitations and Non-Cancerous Causes of Elevated CA 19-9

While high levels of CA 19-9 can suggest the presence of cancer, they are not specific to malignancies. Elevated levels can also be found in:

Liver diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis

Gallbladder disorders including gallstones or inflammation

Other gastrointestinal conditions

Due to these overlaps, CA 19-9 should not be used as a standalone diagnostic tool.
