Cancer Antigen 19.9 (CA 19.9)

CA 19-9 is a blood test that measures the level of a tumor marker called carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in the blood. CA 19-9 is a protein that is produced by some cancer cells, particularly pancreatic cancer cells, and can be found in the blood. The CA 19-9 test is not used as a screening test for cancer, but rather as a tool to monitor the progress of cancer treatment and detect possible recurrence of cancer. It is also used in combination with other tests and evaluations to help diagnose pancreatic cancer and determine the extent and spread of the cancer. Elevated levels of CA 19-9 in the blood may indicate the presence of cancer, but it is important to note that other conditions, such as liver disease and gallbladder disease, can also cause elevated CA 19-9 levels. Therefore, the CA 19-9 test is not a definitive diagnostic test for cancer, and further tests and evaluations may be needed to confirm a diagnosis.
