Chloride (Cl)

Chloride (Cl) is the major anion in the extracelullar water space located in all body fluids responsible for maintaining acid/base balance, transmitting nerve impulses and regulating fluid in and out of cells. Chloride is increased in conditions such as dehydration, renal failure or prolonged diarrhea but is decreased in overhydration, chronic respiratory acidosis, metabolic alkalosis and congestive heart failure.
