Cytokeratin-19 Fragments (CYFRA 21.1)

What is CYFRA 21-1?

CYFRA 21-1 is a tumour marker used in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain cancers, particularly lung cancer. It is a fragment of cytokeratin 19—a protein released by cancer cells—and can be measured through a blood test.

CYFRA 21-1 and Lung Cancer Diagnosis

CYFRA 21-1 is most commonly used to assist in detecting non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While not a standalone diagnostic tool, it is often combined with other procedures such as:

Chest X-rays

CT scans

Bronchoscopy

This combination improves diagnostic accuracy and helps evaluate the extent of the disease.

Monitoring Cancer Treatment and Recurrence

In patients already diagnosed with cancer, CYFRA 21-1 levels can be tracked over time to:

Monitor how well treatment is working

Detect possible recurrence of the disease after treatment

Changes in CYFRA 21-1 levels can provide valuable insight into disease progression or response.

Non-Cancerous Conditions That May Elevate CYFRA 21-1

Elevated CYFRA 21-1 levels are not exclusive to cancer. They may also be seen in non-malignant conditions such as:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Interstitial lung disease

Kidney disease

As a result, CYFRA 21-1 test results must be interpreted alongside other diagnostic findings and clinical assessments.

CYFRA 21-1 Testing in Slough and Surrounding Areas

Private CYFRA 21-1 tumour marker testing is available in Slough, Windsor, Langley, Burnham, and Maidenhead. This test supports the diagnosis and ongoing management of lung cancer, especially NSCLC, and should be used in conjunction with imaging and clinical evaluation for a comprehensive approach to respiratory and oncology care.

There is an additional £20 phlebotomy fee for every donation.
