Estriol is one of 3 major biologically active estrogens in humans (estrone E1, estradiol E2, and estriol E3). Estrogens are responsible for the development of the secondary female sex characteristics. Estriol is a type of estrogen, which is a female hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. Estriol levels rise throughout pregnancy and peak just before delivery. Estriol can also be produced in small amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands in non-pregnant women.
