Herpes Simplex 2 IgM (HSV-2)
HSV-2 IgM is a blood test that looks for the presence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which is the virus that causes genital herpes. IgM is an antibody produced by the immune system in response to a new infection. Unlike the HSV-2 IgG test, which can indicate a current or past infection, the IgM test is primarily used to diagnose a recent infection with the herpes simplex virus. IgM antibodies to HSV-2 are typically detectable within 2-3 weeks of initial infection and may persist for several weeks to a few months before disappearing. If a person suspects they have genital herpes, their healthcare provider may use other diagnostic methods, such as a viral culture or PCR test, to confirm the diagnosis. Additionally, symptoms such as painful genital sores or blisters may also be used to diagnose genital herpes.
