Intrinsic Factor Antibodies
IF Ab stands for Intrinsic Factor Antibodies. Intrinsic factor is a protein produced by the cells in the stomach that helps the body absorb vitamin B12. Intrinsic factor antibodies are antibodies that can develop in response to the presence of intrinsic factor in the body. IF Ab testing is often used in the diagnosis of pernicious anemia, a condition in which the body does not produce enough intrinsic factor, leading to vitamin B12 deficiency. Pernicious anemia can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, and cognitive impairment.
