Lipase
Lipase is an enzyme that plays an important role in the digestion of fats in the body. It is produced mainly by the pancreas and secreted into the small intestine, where it breaks down triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol, which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream and used as a source of energy. Lipase is also present in smaller amounts in other tissues, such as the stomach, liver, and adipose tissue, where it plays a role in regulating lipid metabolism. Tests for lipase levels in the blood can be useful in diagnosing conditions that affect the pancreas, such as acute or chronic pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas that can be caused by gallstones, alcoholism, or other factors. Elevated levels of lipase in the blood can be a sign of pancreatic injury or inflammation.
