Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily by the testicles in men and the ovaries in women. It is responsible for the development of male sex organs and secondary sex characteristics, such as increased muscle mass, body and facial hair growth, and a deepening voice. In women, testosterone is produced in smaller amounts and helps to maintain bone density, muscle mass, and sex drive. Testosterone levels can be measured through a blood test, which can be used to diagnose and monitor a number of conditions. In men, low testosterone levels may be a sign of hypogonadism, a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone. Symptoms of low testosterone in men may include decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and depression. In women, high testosterone levels may be a sign of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that can cause irregular periods, acne, and excess hair growth.
