Y Chromosome Microdeletions
Y chromosome microdeletions are genetic abnormalities that affect the Y chromosome in males. The Y chromosome is one of the two sex chromosomes and contains genes that are important for male development and fertility. Microdeletions are small deletions of genetic material on the Y chromosome that can cause infertility and other reproductive problems. There are several different regions on the Y chromosome that can be affected by microdeletions, but the most common are the azoospermia factor (AZF) regions. These regions contain genes that are important for the development and maturation of sperm. Testing for Y chromosome microdeletions involves analyzing the DNA of the individual for the presence or absence of genetic material in the AZF regions. The test is typically performed in men with infertility or low sperm count, as Y chromosome microdeletions are a common cause of male infertility.
