What Are Y Chromosome Microdeletions?
Y chromosome microdeletions are small missing sections of genetic material on the Y chromosome. These deletions can affect genes involved in sperm production and are an important recognised genetic cause of male infertility.
Why Is the Y Chromosome Important?
The Y chromosome contains genes that are essential for male sexual development and reproductive function. Certain regions of the chromosome are particularly important for the normal development and production of sperm.
AZF Regions and Male Fertility
This test examines specific areas of the Y chromosome known as the azoospermia factor (AZF) regions. These regions contain genes involved in sperm formation and maturation. Microdeletions affecting the AZFa, AZFb or AZFc regions may be associated with reduced sperm production, very low sperm counts or the complete absence of sperm in semen.
What Does the Test Detect?
The Y Chromosome Microdeletions Test uses DNA analysis to identify whether genetic material is missing from important AZF regions of the Y chromosome.
Who May Consider This Test?
Testing may be recommended for men undergoing investigation for infertility, particularly those with azoospermia (no sperm detected in the semen) or severe oligospermia (very low sperm count).
