Cardiolipin Antibodies IgA

Cardiolipin IgA is a blood test used to detect the presence of antibodies to cardiolipin, a phospholipid that is found in the cell membranes of many different types of cells, including those of the heart and blood vessels. Antibodies to cardiolipin can be produced by the immune system in response to a number of different conditions, including autoimmune diseases, infections, and certain medications. Elevated levels of cardiolipin IgA antibodies can be seen in patients with autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The presence of cardiolipin IgA antibodies can also be seen in patients with infectious diseases such as syphilis and Lyme disease. In these cases, cardiolipin IgA antibodies are thought to be produced in response to the bacterial infection rather than to the cardiolipin itself. The cardiolipin IgA test is typically performed as part of a panel of tests used to evaluate patients with symptoms suggestive of autoimmune or infectious diseases. Interpretation of the test results should be done in conjunction with other clinical information, and further testing may be necessary to diagnose specific medical conditions.
