Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TG Ab)
What Is Thyroglobulin (Tg)?
Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a protein produced by the thyroid gland and serves as a crucial component in the lumen of the thyroid follicle. It plays an essential role in the synthesis and storage of thyroid hormones.
Role of Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies
In individuals with autoimmune thyroid disorders, the immune system may mistakenly produce antibodies against thyroglobulin (Tg-autoantibodies). Elevated levels of these antibodies are often detected in autoimmune-based thyroiditis.
Association with Hashimoto's Disease
High concentrations of anti-Tg antibodies, particularly when found alongside anti-TPO antibodies, are strongly associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto's disease. This condition is a common cause of hypothyroidism and leads to progressive thyroid dysfunction.
Prevalence in Autoimmune Thyroid Conditions
Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are present in approximately 70–80% of individuals with autoimmune thyroiditis, including Hashimoto’s disease. They are also found in around 30% of patients with Graves’ disease, which causes hyperthyroidism.
Private Thyroid Antibody Testing in Slough
