Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TG Ab)

What Is Thyroglobulin (Tg)?

Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a protein produced by the thyroid gland and serves as a crucial component in the lumen of the thyroid follicle. It plays an essential role in the synthesis and storage of thyroid hormones.

Role of Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies

In individuals with autoimmune thyroid disorders, the immune system may mistakenly produce antibodies against thyroglobulin (Tg-autoantibodies). Elevated levels of these antibodies are often detected in autoimmune-based thyroiditis.

Association with Hashimoto's Disease

High concentrations of anti-Tg antibodies, particularly when found alongside anti-TPO antibodies, are strongly associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto's disease. This condition is a common cause of hypothyroidism and leads to progressive thyroid dysfunction.

Prevalence in Autoimmune Thyroid Conditions

Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are present in approximately 70–80% of individuals with autoimmune thyroiditis, including Hashimoto’s disease. They are also found in around 30% of patients with Graves’ disease, which causes hyperthyroidism.

Private Thyroid Antibody Testing in Slough

Residents of Slough and surrounding areas such as Windsor, Maidenhead, Langley, and Burnham can access private blood testing for anti-thyroglobulin antibodies. Early detection of thyroid autoantibodies is essential for diagnosing autoimmune thyroid conditions and supporting effective long-term management.
