Gastrointestinal (GI) Viral Screen
The Gastrointestinal (GI) Viral Screen is a diagnostic test that identifies viral infections affecting the stomach and intestines. These viruses are among the most common causes of gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and fever. Detecting these viruses helps determine the cause of infection and guides appropriate management to prevent dehydration and complications.
Common Viruses Detected
Norovirus: A highly contagious virus responsible for outbreaks of gastroenteritis. It causes sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea, often spreading through contaminated food or surfaces.
Rotavirus: A leading cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children. Infection may result in watery diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, often requiring rehydration therapy.
Adenovirus: This virus can affect the respiratory and digestive tracts. Gastrointestinal infection with adenovirus leads to fever, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
Sapovirus: A viral agent that causes gastroenteritis in both children and adults, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain, often spread via contaminated food or water.
Astrovirus: Common in children but can also infect adults. It causes mild to moderate gastroenteritis with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.
